31 October 2011 from Love Pork
British legend and life-long sausage fan, Noddy Holder has taken over the crown as King of the Sizzle for the most hotly anticipated food event of the year, the legendary British Sausage Week 2011.
Noddy kicked off the Week today by casting his hand prints and favourite sausages into the inaugural Sausage Walk of Fame at Smithfield Meat Market in London.
He was joined by celebrity chef Brian Turner as well as esteemed London butchers whose sausages made it into the regional finals of the Legendary British Bangers competition.
Noddy has joined the British Sausage Appreciation Society to celebrate the Legendary British Banger and will be embarking on a nationwide Tour of Legends, taking in Newcastle, Manchester, Nottingham, Birmingham and Bristol. British Sausage Week runs from 31st October to 6th of November.
Whether it is a traditional pork and herb sausage, a tangy pork and chilli or fancy pork and stilton, Noddy is in for a treat as he takes on the task to judge the finest across the country and awarding those that are worthy of a 2011 British Sausage Week Gold Disc.
This year there have been entries from butchers, supermarkets, school cooks, and chefs across the country, all anxious to showcase their sausages in the Legendary British Bangers competition. Regional winners will be awarded during British Sausage Week and will not only receive the much sought after Gold Disc but also a donation to a local charity of their choice.
“The great British banger is a genuine legend, with incredible stories from butchers about recipes have been handed down from generation to generation. I can’t wait to get on the road and judge the best of the best bangers out there and find out what makes those humble sausages we eat week in week out so special!” commented Noddy.
Now in its 14th incredible year, British Sausage Week the most recognised food week in the retailer calendar, according to The Grocer. Furthermore the great British banger is the nation’s favourite meat-based dinner, outselling chicken or minced beef and accounting for a staggering 854 million meals every year.
Organised by The British Sausage Appreciation Society, British Sausage Week celebrates the taste, quality and diversity of the sausage, of which there are some 400 individually named varieties in Britain alone.
To celebrate British Sausage Week, independent butchers and supermarkets alike will be running events and special offers so look out for special sausage themed menus in local pubs and restaurants. For those looking to experiment with sausages at home, the British Sausage Appreciation Society will be launching their new and exclusive recipe booklet, the Legendary British Bangers Greatest Hits Remixed.
When shopping for your sausages, don’t forget to look out for quality assurance such as that identified by the Red Tractor Pork logo on pack. This ensures that your sausages have been produced to exacting quality control and welfare standards. That way of course you will also be supporting the very farmers who uphold them.
